Three Wheeled Buggies

If you're seeking a buggy to jog with or just a nifty stroller to tackle neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight spaces.

If you're looking for a smooth ride with your baby, opt for models with 360deg front wheels that can swivel. However, they are prone to punctures so be prepared with a repair kit.

Sturdy frame

Recent figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled vehicle - a symbol of the noughties of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more flexible and simple to drive while still looking fashionable.

The larger the wheels are the more your buggy will be able to deal with bumpy and uneven pavements. Having larger wheels both front and back makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy out with an infant as well as a child who was jogging 3 wheel stroller years old and found it very durable. It handled cobbles, grass and rough pavements, as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt sturdy to push, and extremely solid on rough terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need occasional pumping) come with suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my kids.

The shape and size of the seat is a further factor to consider. You want the seat to be big enough for your child to feel comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which allows the child to face you, whereas others only permit a parent-facing option.

Wheels with a greater diameter

Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability when driving on rough terrain. This is perfect for off-road buggies. Additionally, they allow you to maneuver the buggy through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to assist you in maneuvering around tight corners, whereas others are designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability at which they can be pushed. This is also helpful if you bump into an unintentional tree root or curb, since the front wheel can be lifted up to keep you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheeled pushchair wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to tackle a broad range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they're prone to punctures and you'll need to keep an repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.

Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and are able to easily move up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which, in her words "smoothes out bumps extremely effectively".

Buggies with larger wheels can be quite large, and may struggle to fit into narrow spaces. This is an issue especially if you're using it to a jogger or to be able to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and out and about. Many models have small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.

Easy to Manoeuvre

A three-wheeled buggy is more maneuverable for children. The way they are constructed means that the front wheels rotate at a quick pace and are extremely maneuverable, making them ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheel stroller with infant car seat wheeler with her newborn and toddler and said: "The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough ground and the swivel front wheel being particularly helpful. I was also impressed with the way it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. It was extremely stable when in the downhills or on a rough terrain."

The only downside to this incredible maneuverability is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel baby buggy-wheel buggy may make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something to keep in mind when you live in a city. If this is a concern then a 4-wheeler might be a better choice for you.
