Seating

This should allow your child plenty of room and headroom.

A fabric sling seat is also available. It has the advantage of being placed snugly within the frame rather than over the top of an open-back seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity as well as a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this type of seat dealt with the obstacles.

This type of buggy comes with an enormous basket, along with other useful features such as an extendable hood with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal and some unique visibility lights that can be positioned in front of the occupants for improved safety on difficult terrain.

The 3-wheeled frame is more stable and can be pushed with one hand. It's also better for terrain that is difficult. However, it also means that the shopping basket can't hold the same amount as a 4-wheeled buggy.

A top-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres with a padded grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It will be able to accept a carrycot or car seat, so you can use it from birth.

The MFM reviewers noted that the 3 wheeled buggies-wheeler frame didn't fit through their home's doors or car boot. If you're concerned about space, make sure to check out the dimensions when the buggy is folded before buying.

It's worth considering 3-wheelers that can accommodate 2 (or even 3!) seats once your family grows. These are the best of both worlds and future proof your money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the best of these that can be used as a single unit from day dot and later converts into twin buggies once your baby starts walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more comfortable. They are commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil & Ted’s Sport that MFM reviewer Kath said was "an outstanding ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres make it easy to tackle kerbs and cobbles.

They can be difficult to maintain and require having their air pressure maintained regularly. They are also more susceptible to punctures than foam tyres. So you'll need to make sure that you have repair kits along with a spare inner tube and pump handy when traveling with your buggy.

PU tyres can be found on more pushchairs than air-filled tyres but they are still just as durable. PU tires are easily distinguished by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide easily on even and tied surfaces.

If you rub your hands over the tyres, you can tell if they're rubber or PU. If it feels like it's moving, then it's a PU. You can also verify that your buggy has PU tyres simply by sliding the tyres onto flat, clean surfaces - they'll be able to roll easily and fit snugly into their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are typically used in high-performance buggies as well as Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain that's common to this type of pushchair. This could make your buggy less stable since the foam will lose its springy feel. Also, these tyres may frequently be noisy, as they make a lot of noise when you turn and make your way around town.
