3 Wheeler Buggies

A tri-wheeled stroller is ideal for off-road terrain and offers the most comfortable ride for infants. They are also more convenient to move and push than a four-wheel buggy, especially those with fabric sling seats or modular seats that are set perfectly in the frame, offering the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheel buggy has excellent stability, which is why it's a good choice for off road walking (especially with an all terrain or off-road style seat). They often feature oversized front wheels that can deal well with bumps and kerbs and rough ground. Some even come with a lockable front wheel to give extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It's important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than 4-wheeled versions and, therefore, could fall more easily. If you are looking for a buggy to take on difficult terrain, you should select one with large tires. They can handle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks and provide an enjoyable ride for all passengers. They are also great for jogging because they come with suspension and are easy to move up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they are quite heavy to push.

Fabric sling seats sit snugly within the frame of the buggie, as opposed to over it like modular seats. This design provides an lower centre of gravity at the perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot think about how often you'll be doing this as a new parent!)

Seating

The capacity for 3 wheelers is impressive and there are a variety of different options to choose from. For newborns, there is the option to use the carrycot and (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lie flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy), while older babies and toddlers can be seated in the parent-facing or world-facing seat unit that is roomy and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats aren't fully reclined however they can be lowered to the lowest position that will still allow your child plenty of headroom and room to move around.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It is placed snugly within the frame, rather than sitting on top as the modular seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier and lighter to push, particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath was impressed with the way this type of seat handled these challenges.

This type of buggy comes with an enormous basket, along with other useful features such as an extended hood with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal and some unique visibility lights that can be placed on the front of the passengers for improved safety on difficult terrain.

The MFM reviewers noted that the 3-wheeler frames didn't fit through their home doors or car boot. If you're worried about space, be sure you check the dimensions of the buggy when it is folded before buying.

Tyres

These tyres cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. These tyres can sometimes prove difficult to maintain their inflation and will need to be replenished regularly. PU tyres are typically used on pushchairs since they are less expensive than air-filled tyres, but they are equally durable. You can recognise PU tire treads by their matte appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also slide easily on smooth and tightly woven surfaces.
