The advanced navigation system of this Roomba is a combination of iRobot Precision Vision navigation and cameras that recognize objects from the home and obstacles. The cameras enable it to avoid common obstacles, such as cords and shoes, socks, bags, pet toys and backpacks. It then applies customized cleaning around these objects. The Combo i5/i5+ comes with patented Dirt Detect technology, which helps the robot focus more attention on spots that are dirty.

This robot's auto-emptying Clean Base can store up to 60 days of debris and it reduces the need for manual maintenance. It also has a recharge-and-resume feature that can send the robot to its homebase to charge when its battery is exhausted. It then picks up exactly where it was when it left.

While the i5+ is a great robot for homes with a lot of space, it's important to note that it's not made for carpeted or stairwells. It has a small capacity dust bin, which means it can't clean the entire house in the event of lots of pets or other debris. If you're seeking a Roomba that can handle more challenging environments, consider the I7 or i9 models. These robots are more equipped to tackle stairs and can also be used for wet mopping. The iRobot Combo i5/i5+, with its unique design and cutting-edge technology is an ideal choice for homes who need both a vacuum cleaner and mop.

iRobot Roomba Combo i7

This premium model comes with premium features and class-leading performance that should help it draw customers away from the swath of low-cost competitors. The most notable upgrade is the automatic dirt disposal that eliminates the need for a dustbin after each clean. Another feature is persistent mapping that allows the i7+ to remember the layout of your home and adapt to different layouts on the fly.

The Combo i7+ has a easy setup procedure, and a clear on-screen guide that walks you through the initial registration and setup. Once the robot is registered, you can use the iRobot Home app or voice commands to tell it to vacuum or mop. The i7+ is also easy to program by allowing you to program cleaning times and set virtual boundaries that it will follow.

In our tests the i7+ performed very well in climbing over floor cracks and rugs easily. It was also able detect obstacles such as furniture without difficulty, though it was unable to climb over a slab of marble measuring two inches that separated the kitchen and living rooms. The edge cleaning capabilities were much better than the results we saw from the budget robot vacuums with a firm grip on corners.

When the i7+ has reached its maximum capacity, it goes back to its Clean Base and empties its contents. Then it gets ready for the next clean. You can add cleaning fluid by pressing a button on one side of the robot. A small water tank/dustbin will then be clipped open.

The only real drawback is that the Clean Base takes up a considerable amount of space and is difficult to store the i7+ away in a closet if it's not in use. This is a common problem with robot cleaners, and a majority of manufacturers have charging stations which are smaller. These stations are also usually capable of fitting under cabinets, making it easier to conceal your iRobot while not being used. iRobot has reached out to us following publication to clarify that the Combo i7+ is designed to be used only with the manufacturer-approved cleaning solution (sold separately). It is not recommended to fill it with water, which could harm internal components and reduce performance.

iRobot Roomba Combo i9

The robot vacuums and mops at the same time. It makes use of its dual stainless steel arm to pick up dirt while it moves. In addition to being capable of connecting to smart home devices and other smart home devices, the iRobot i8 can work with the iBraava Jet M6, which can be set to automatically mop after the i8 has completed vacuuming. The i8 comes with a Clean Base Automated Dirt Disposal and an extra HEPA filter.

This is the newest flagship vacuum, and the most powerful yet. It has a bigger internal dustbin and can move more easily over rugs. It also can detect more debris on any floor type.
