Multiple sensors and a digital camera make this one of the most maneuverable vacuums we've ever encountered. It can configure a consistent path around your house and, if you remember it to avoid obstacles, and even detect the edges of ledges.

The 980XL is a top robot, and its additional features are worth the price. It has a more sophisticated mapping system than the 900 series and it is more efficient in cleaning both on carpet and hard floors. It is also possible to start it by remote.

It also features an efficient cleaning system that features 10 times the power-lifting suction of older Roombas and uses a dual-swiveling brush that can reach corners and under furniture. It will even automatically clean your floors after it has vacuumed.

It's a little loud however, especially when you use the carpet boost feature. We measured it at 80 dB, which is about the same as prop planes flying overhead. You can create a virtual fence to keep it out of vulnerable areas, such as the dog's food bowl and water bowls.
