Door handles may seem like something minor, but if you dislike the style or design of them, or are unable to use them, it's worth replacing them. With a little patience, you can install the new handle in no time.

Removing the old Handle

If you have an old rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate, making the handle easier to use.

The first step is to remove the screw holding the latch plate. These screws can be quite tight, and may require some force to loosen. It is helpful to get a second person to assist with this task if you can.

The latch plate should easily be removed from the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This will sometimes free the plate up.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. With the wood screws that were included with your new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not tighten the screws too much as this could damage the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to check if it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't, you will need to adjust the strikeplate up or down, or forward or back until the door locks correctly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common in older doors, however it could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or the wrong size for the latch, or from damage or a broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the situation then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Remove the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks into the door frame so that the door stays closed. If your door wiggles when you close it, replacing the latch may be all you need to fix it.

It's difficult to identify the screws that secure the latch to the door, but there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver in order to take it off. Once you've removed the trim plate, it'll be easy to remove the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in place.

If the latch doesn't easily be released, try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel handle and latch begin to separate. It is possible repeat this process a few times before you can remove the latch.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without issues after you've removed the old one. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's properly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). You should also check whether the size of the latch on the new handle is in line with the measurement of your existing handle.

You'll need a new lock cylinder if you're replacing the handle and latch or your existing one is damaged. If you're not changing the locks, however, a new latch will fit into your existing recess and will be compatible with your current keys. Make sure you select the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your old handles.

Removing the Cover Plate

To replace the door handle inside remove the cover plate (or rose) that protects the screws and the inner mechanism. Find a release tab on the plate and employ a flathead screwdriver pop it off the knob. It may have an opening on one edge or be secured by pins.

After the holes are drilled, you'll need to install new screws for the door knob. Be sure to purchase the same size as the previous ones, to ensure that you do not end up with a handle that's too tight or too loose. Installing a new latch and strike rod is also mandatory.
