This WiFi connected bagless robot has an all-black utilitarian design. Its price is comparable to other top-of-the-line smart robotic vacuums.

It can be controlled using the physical Clean and Dock buttons at the top of the screen, through the SharkClean app, or by using voice commands with Alexa and Google Assistant. It comes with a variety of smart features, such as home mapping and virtual no-go zones.

Matrix Clean

The most popular vacuum cleaner in America (based on NPD Group/Retail tracking Service data). Matrix Clean features incredible suction power, Matrix & Precision Home Mapping and a self-emptying base.

SharkClean is an app you can download on your smartphone to map your rooms. Once it's done mapping the app lets you create an agenda for your robot to keep your home clean or select rooms to have the Matrix start an automatic cleaning session. You can also set up zones that are 'no-go, such as closets or beds that you don't want Matrix to get into.

The app allows you to use the "spot cleaning" function on demand. You can choose a dirty area on your floor map and the robot will then clean that area automatically with several swipes on its cleaning pad. It does a great job of removing everything from loose dog hair tumbleweeds to tiny pieces of paper that were cut and scattered from a recent craft project.

When the Matrix finishes it's cleaning job it will return to its dock and empty itself into the included bin. This is a great feature because it reduces your need to perform maintenance.

This robot's LIDAR mapping sensor is located just above. This may hinder it from being able to climb under furniture that is low like tables and sofas. However, if you don't mind being a little taller than other robots, this is still a very good choice. Be aware that this one doesn't come with a HEPA air filter, like some other models in this list.

Precision Home Mapping

Shark's Matrix Clean Navigation is a precision grid that ensures no spot is missed. Incredible suction pulls dirt, dust and debris to a bagless base with 60-day capacity. Precision home mapping combines 360deg of LiDAR vision with a precise home map in the SharkClean app to allow for fully autonomous movement and intelligent object avoidance. It creates a detailed map of your home, day or night, allowing complete navigation without bumping furniture and other obstructions. This means your robot can be left to complete a cleaning schedule or you can trigger Matrix cleaning on demand and set specific targets for your room from the app.

Powerful Suction

The RV2502AE is a top mid-range robot cleaner that ticks all the boxes. It's simple to use, produces accurate home maps, and has an empty bag that self-empties. It's also less expensive to run than other robot vacuum and mop bagless vacuums.

It also has plenty of power, scooping up debris with its suction opening, and relying on its side brushes to push hair and carpet threads into the brushroll. This stops the brushroll from becoming blocked and causing a mess as seen in other robotic vacuums. This makes the machine more efficient for picking up hair from pets.

Apart from its suction power and self-emptying base, this robot comes with Matrix Clean Navigation for a thorough cleaning, Precision Home Mapping for object avoidance, a high-efficiency HEPA filter that can snare 99 percent of odors dust mites, and allergens and has two power modes to suit different floor types and the remote control that gives the user full access to all its functions. It's also compatible with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant which allows you to initiate cleaning without having to touch the robot.

While it's a great option for most homes but some may find its navigation capabilities problematic. This bump bot was having issues with stairs. Other bump bots can avoid them but this one could not. It utilized LiDAR sensors as well as infrared to map my house, but kept mistaking the cat condo as a staircase and asked me whether I wanted to move it. It also had a shorter running time than advertised, with only 180 minutes.

Self-Empty Base

Some robots - like this one - have self-emptying bases which vacuum or dump the debris from the onboard dustbin into an external dirt compartment to make maintenance easier. These are known as Clean Base Dirt Disposal (iRobot), Auto Empty Station (Ecovacs) or Bagless Self-Emptying Base (Shark). They are a great alternative however they can be noisy and messy. They typically require special disposal bags.

This Shark model comes with an HEPA-filtered bagless base that boasts a huge capacity. It can store debris for up to 60 days and does not require daily emptying as other models. There's also a huge amount of incredible Shark suction that can tackle the most difficult mess. The only downside is that the docking station's vacuum system that is used to clean the onboard dust bin is quite loud.

When the robot is plugged in and charging, it will emit an audible beep and a green light on its top will flash to indicate that it's ready to begin cleaning. When the battery of the robot is low it will dock itself to its base and stop working until it's recharged. It is essential that the dock or Self-Empty Base is placed in a place that isn't blocked by furniture or other objects and is free of obstructions in the vicinity of it.

While this model is slightly more expensive than the other mid-range robotic mop models we've examined, it is solid and performs better on bare floors, a longer maximum battery life, less maintenance requirements and a wider variety of automation features such as virtual boundary markers. The iRobot Roomba i7, however is still our preferred choice because it feels more durable and more refined, charges faster, gets caught on rug tassels much less frequently and has a higher capacity battery.

Easy Setup

The Shark AI Ultra has a simple to use Schedule that requires just a few inputs. You can select the date and time of sunrise and sunset. You can also choose the duration of the ramp times (increasing brightness or decreasing brightness) and whether to turn on the lights at night.

It doesn't have voice control or smart mapping like Alexa and Google Assistant but it has an extremely useful free programming suite. This suite has various Windows-based applications that permit the setting of operating parameters and communication settings, dmXLAN node and switch configuration, real-time tests and quick replication of the configuration to multiple installations.

The interface is simple to understand even for the most inexperienced user. It includes tabs at the top that correspond to the various screens that the installer will show and also tabs to experiment with different options for colors and messages. It is an extremely efficient tool, and it lets you create an installer for your program quickly. The program is just 1.3MB in size and works with Windows 7 to Windows 95.
