Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

The coding results were then compared to the original RI transcripts, giving an indication of how well the RIs were able to capture the fundamental behaviors.

Refusal Interviews (RIs)

The central question in pragmatic research is: Why do certain learners refuse to accept native-speaker norms? Recent research sought to answer this question by using various experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants included 44 CLKs and 46 CNSs from five Korean Universities. The participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs in their L1 or L2. Then they were invited to a RI where they were required to consider their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that, on average, the CLKs resisted native-speaker pragmatic norms in over 40% of their answers. They did so even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors, like relational advantages. They also discussed, for instance how their relationships with their professors allowed them to function more easily in terms of the linguistic and cultural expectations of their university.

The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or penalties they could be subject to when their social norms were violated. They were worried that their local friends might perceive them as "foreigners" and believe they are unintelligent. This was a concern similar to those voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native speakers pragmatic norms aren't the default preference for Korean learners. They could remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reconsider their relevance in specific scenarios and in various cultural contexts. This will allow them to better understand the effect of different cultural environments on the behavior of students and classroom interactions of students in L2.
